Malahide Historical Society

AIMS:

Malahide Historical Society was founded in 1978 with the following aims:

• To find out the history of the wider Malahide area including Portmarnock.
• To gather details of events both major and minor, record them and narrate them through lectures and walks.
• To instil a love of Malahide village and surroundings among the people who live here.
• To preserve the unique qualities of Malahide, which may be in danger of being lost.
• To produce publications on the history of the Malahide area.
• To establish a Museum.

​MEMBERSHIP

Membership of Malahide Historical Society is open to all who have an interest in local history and in furthering the aims of the Society. The subscription is €15. No special skills are required. Fill in this online Membership Application Form or download a hard copy to post back to us.

LECTURES 

The Society organises regular lectures, usually on the second Tuesday of the month between October and May on a wide variety of topics. See programme on Home page. During Covid 19 restrictions are held online over Zoom for members only.

MUSEUM 

With the generous assistance of Fingal County Council we run a small two-roomed museum in the building known as the Steward's House, the two storey three bay house in the coach park adjacent to the castle courtyard and visitor centre. We have an eclectic collection on display together with several audio visual programmes. Entry is free and the museum is manned by Society volunteers - see Home page for opening hours. 

Due to Covid19 restrictions our museum is closed until further notice but we hope to open as soon as public safety guidelines permit. 

​PUBLICATIONS 

The NEWSLETTER is distributed to members two or three times annually. 117 issues have been published to date.  These contain articles of local historical and regional interest. A complete bound set of the back numbers is available in the Local Studies section of Malahide Library. Copies of back numbers and a comprehensive index of sources for local historical research are available on request to malahidehistoricalsociety2@gmail.com. The index will be available on-line at this site at a later date.

PROJECTS

Photographic Archive.
The Society has built a substantial archive of images of Old Malahide comprising, postcards, old photographs and digital copies where the owner wishes to retain the originals or copyright restrictions may apply. We are always keen to receive additions either as gifts or to make digital copies and return originals.

'Malahide Houses of Note' Project
This on-going project aims to collect as much history as possible about significant houses in the Malahide area, of which over seventy have so far been identified. Society members are encouraged to 'adopt' a house and research its history and former residents.

The Shops, Cinemas and other Businesses of Malahide
Another on-going project collecting information about businesses, trades, shops, etc. in Malahide in the past. See the Shops page.

Schools Local History Liaison 
The Society occasionally works with 6th. class teachers in the local schools with regard to the local history module of the schools curriculum.

Oral history recording
